ICAF Certification Requirements

General Education Requirements

ICAF certification requires completion of the following 10 General Education courses:

  • PY001  Assessments in Creative Arts Therapy
  • PY002  Culture & Diversity
  • PY003  Documentation & Records Management
  • PY004  Ethics & Standards
  • PY006  Group Process & Creative Arts Therapy
  • PY007  Human Growth & Development Across the Lifespan
  • PY008  Intermodal Creative Arts Therapy: Theory & Practice
  • PY009  Introduction to Psychology
  • PY010-F  Psychopathology (ICAF)
  • PY012  Theories of Counseling & Psychology

Each CELA General Education course is 30 contact hours

ICAF candidates are required to complete the following General Education courses through CELA:

  • PY001  Assessments in Creative Arts Therapy
  • PY006  Group Process & Creative Arts Therapy
  • PY008  Intermodal Creative Arts Therapy: Theory & Practice

Arts Area Coursework Requirements

Every ICAF candidate is required to select a primary arts area and two secondary arts areas within which they will focus their internship work. Intermodal Creative Arts involves moving among different arts areas when working with clients. ICAF certification requires the arts area coursework to be in classes whose primary focus is in an arts area and not in arts-in-therapy.

CELA requires the following minimum number of contact hours for each arts area of focus:

  • 50 contact hours in a primary arts area
  • 20 contact hours in a secondary arts area
  • 20 contact hours in an additional secondary arts area

Arts Areas include: visual arts, dance and movement, culinary arts, music, language arts, dramatic arts, horticulture, and permaculture.

CELA currently offers online courses in the following Arts Areas:

  • Visual arts
  • Music
  • Language arts
  • Creative writing

Each CELA Arts Area course is 30 hours/2 credits

Required Reading

ICAF certification training has a required reading component. All candidates must enroll in PY011 Required Reading in order to complete the reading work. Each required reading title has an assigned writing component that students must complete.

Supervised Internship Requirement

Facilitation Skills

ICAF certification requires completion of a minimum 500-hour supervised internship with a minimum 50 hours of individual supervision. The internship must be conducted at a CELA-approved internship site. Candidates must enroll in PY005 Facilitation Skills in order to complete the supervised internship training requirements.
